Outstanding State enterprise award to DPO (Thai-Danish)

On Friday evening, August 18, 2017, Dr. Narongrit Wongsuwan, Director of  Dairy farming promotion Organization of Thailand (DPO) received the Outstanding State Enterprise Award for Outstanding organization development in the overall year of 2017 from General Prayut,  Prime Minister of Thailand.

It was awarded for the second year in a row to DPO in category of small state organization for the ability of DPO  to make significant improvement to the organization.. The presentation took place at  the 20th Annual State Enterprise Award Ceremony at Bangkok Convention Center Centara Grand Hotel Central World Bangkok.

The DPO is also know as Thai-Denmark and originates from a Danish-Thai development project initiated in 1962 under royal patronage by the late king Bhumiphol of Thailand and king Frederik IX of Denmark.

The Danish red cows originally presented to the project from Denmark are still the logo of the Thai-Danish dairies but when asked directly during a recent interview to mention Danish companies involved in the Thai dairy industry today, Dr. Narongrit just smiled and shrug his shoulders.

Despite the fact that the Thai-Danish dairy project often is mentioned as one of the most successful Danish development projects, then the continued success and survival of the project solely rest on the shoulders of the Thai themselves as the Danish dairy business has been very passive and in general are loosing out in their opportunities in the Thai dairy development.

One the the Danish trained veterans in the Dairy industry, Khun Sawaeng, who worked in Denmark for ARLA dairy industries for a couple decades, put it clearly: “Why when Denmark invested in developing the Thai dairy industry are the Danes letting other countries skim the cream ?”

The Thai dairy industry is in a continued development phase and although 70-80 % of dairy farms still has less than 30 cows then the trend towards more economical size of 50 cows up is common. There is according to DPO many opportunities for Danish dairy technology providers in the field of feeding quality, cool chain technology, quality control equipment and general know how in organic product development.

The Thai dairy industry is a leading partner i Dairy Asia initiative under FAO and has over the past 55 years developed extensive know how in tropical dairy farming.

The DPO developed an export of over 600 million Thb per year to Cambodia of its Thai-Danish UHT milk products thanks to a strong brand recognition among the Cambodian population.

DTCC congratulates Dr. Narongrit and DPO for their achievement and we hope that Danish dairy industry will take up the challenge and actively participate in.
